Oktoberfest begins in late September, and also with it comes photos of a Lederhosen putting on, Beer consuming, Pretzel eating Man, with his Lusty dirndl putting on Fraulein. This image is just partly real, and also doesn't tell the entire tale. So, what IS Oktoberfest in Germany? And why is it commemorated? And that commemorates?
What IS Oktoberfest in Germany?
It could sound weird, but not all Germans celebrate Oktoberfest. You see, Oktoberfest is a Bavarian Tradition. And similar to not all Americans are Cowboys ... not all Germans are Bavarians.
But since most every person suches as beer and also crackers, the world has accepted Oktoberfest. (The globe has yet to embrace Lederhosen ... I'm taking this as a good sign that the globe is mostly on the best track).
A little history initially to place the celebration into perspective ... In October of 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. All Bavarians were invited to commemorate with Festivities (primarily horse auto racing) in the Theresenwiese (a meadow relabelled for the occasion). It was so popular, that they celebrated once more the next year! and also the next ... as well as the next. (The powers that arrange these things made the wise choice to removal the event to September, to take advantage of far better weather condition)... Except for years of War or Cholera, Oktoberfest has actually been celebrated annually ever since.
